Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya is home to 310,000 refugees from 19 countries. It’s a desolate place with scarce resources and little hope. Refugees in Kakuma live in dire conditions. Few will ever leave.
Exodus is now helping to fund the construction of a community center in Kakuma.
Working with a refugee-led Christian organization in Kakuma, the center will provide a safe place where refugee youth can gain key skills—like leadership and entrepreneurship—and most of all, belonging, community, and hope.

Nearly every resettled refugee in the U.S. carries the pain of separation from family members who remain in refugee camps like Kakuma—displaced from their homelands and unable to truly build a new life.
Richard didn’t plan to leave his life in Uganda. Yet when violent conflict erupted, he fled as a teen, walking to Kenya. He ended up in Kakuma, wondering how he would survive there.
Richard was among the fortunate few who was resettled to the U.S. in 2024. With Exodus volunteers by his side, Richard started a new life in Chicago. Yet he carries a deep pain—leaving behind beloved family members in Kakuma who were unable to resettle with him.
